Charles Babbage

Academic Achievements: He founded many societies, the most important being the Royal Astronomical Academy (1820) and the British Association for the Advancement of Science (1831). In 1824, he won the Royal Astronomical Society's gold medal for his invention of mathematical and astronomical tables, also known as the difference engine.
Contributions to Computer Science: Charles' main contributions to computer science are his inventions of the principle of the analytic engine and the first mechanical computer.
